Who walks through a laundromat door
A laundromat’s customers fall into a few clear groups. Renters and apartment dwellers without a machine, or without anywhere to dry clothes. People whose washer has just broken. Travellers, backpackers and people between homes. Families with a doona, a dog bed or a pile of sports gear too big for the machine at home. And a growing set of small businesses, such as short-stay hosts, salons, massage clinics, gyms and cafes, that need towels and linen washed every week.
Most of them find you the same way: they open Google Maps and type “laundromat near me”, “laundromat open now” or “24 hour laundromat”. The rest of your marketing builds on how well you show up there.
The listing that does the heavy lifting
Treat your Google Business Profile as your shopfront sign, menu and opening hours rolled into one.
- Categories: “Laundromat” as primary. Add “Laundry service” only if you offer service washes or wash and fold.
- Hours: exact, including the hours the store is staffed and when it runs unattended. If you’re open 24 hours, say so and make sure the profile shows it.
- Photos: the entrance from the street, parking, the machine row with capacity labels visible, the big machines next to a doona for scale, the payment terminal or app sign, and a clean folding area. People want to see that the place is tidy and safe.
- Attributes and Q&A: accessibility, Wi-Fi, payment types, whether soap is supplied.
- Reviews: a QR code sign near the folding bench asking for a review, ideally mentioning what they washed. Reply to every review, including complaints about a broken machine.
Our local SEO work handles the profile, listing consistency across directories and the location page that supports it.
A website that answers the practical questions
Laundromat sites don’t need to be big. They need to answer, on a phone, what someone wants to know before they carry a heavy bag across the road:
- Machine sizes and prices per wash and dry cycle
- Whether you take card, coins or an app
- Opening hours and when staff are on site
- Parking, and whether you’re near public transport
- What fits in the big machines (queen doonas, rugs, pet bedding)
Then separate pages for any service that isn’t self-serve: wash and fold, ironing, doona and blanket washing, and pickup and delivery. These are the higher-margin lines and they’re searched on their own, as “wash and fold near me”, “doona washing” or “laundry pickup service”.
Laundromat services to grow
- Self-service washers and dryers
- Wash and fold service washes
- Doona, blanket and bulky item washing
- Pickup and delivery
- Weekly linen and towel accounts for small businesses
Commercial linen is the steady money
Self-service income moves with the weather and the season. Wet weeks fill the dryers and dry spells empty them. Commercial accounts even that out. Short-stay hosts need sheets and towels turned around between guests, beauty and massage clinics go through towels daily, gyms and sports clubs have bags of training gear, and cafes need tea towels and aprons.
Write a page aimed at those buyers that covers pickup days, turnaround times, how you price (per kilogram or per bag), how items are kept separate and labelled, and how invoicing works. Then approach nearby businesses directly. One reliable weekly account can be worth more than many walk-in visits. Simple CRM can track each account’s pickup schedule, volume and value, and send pickup reminders by SMS.
If you run a dry cleaning counter as well, our dry cleaner marketing page covers how to cross-sell between the two.
Advertising on a small budget
Paid search for “laundromat near me” can work in a tight radius, but most self-service customers will find you on Maps anyway. Spend is usually better aimed at the services with higher value per order, such as wash and fold, doona washing and commercial linen. Google Ads targeted to a few kilometres around the store, with ads timed for evenings and weekends when people plan their washing, is a sensible test. Our Google Ads management can run that. For a sense of what a small local campaign costs, see our marketing budget guide.
Seasonal posts on your Google profile help too. Before winter, push doona and blanket washing. During a run of rain, remind people your dryers are big and quick. Around university intake and the summer moving season, new renters are looking for a local laundry.
What to measure
Use the data you already have. Most card and app payment systems report revenue by machine and by hour, which shows when the store is busy and which machines earn. Alongside that, track Google profile calls and direction requests, service-wash orders, pickup bookings, commercial accounts and the revenue each brings. For wash and fold or commercial enquiries, ask: rough weight or number of bags, item types, turnaround needed, how often, pickup address, and any special handling such as stain treatment or particular folding.
Questions about laundromat marketing
Does a laundromat need a website if it’s mostly found on Google Maps?
A simple one, yes. Your Maps listing gets the walk-in trade, but the website is where people check prices, machine sizes and payment options, and where you can sell wash and fold, doona washing and commercial linen properly. It also gives Google more information about your business, which supports the listing. One page for the store and one for each service is plenty for a single location.
How do we attract short-stay hosts and small businesses?
Make a page specifically for them, then go and ask. List your pickup area, turnaround, pricing per kilo or bag, and how you keep each client’s linen separate. Approach property managers who handle short-stay listings, beauty and massage clinics, gyms and cafes within your pickup area. Offer a trial week. Once an account is running, reliability keeps it, so record every pickup and delivery and fix problems the same day.
How do we get things moving?
Request a free marketing audit. Share your store address, hours and the services you want to grow, such as wash and fold or commercial linen. We’ll look at your Google listing, photos, reviews and site through the eyes of someone deciding where to do their washing, and send back a prioritised list of improvements. Any implementation is quoted separately.
