When a cool room fails, the clock is the customer

A restaurant owner who arrives to a warm cool room at 6am has no time to read reviews for half an hour. They are looking at thousands of dollars of stock, a food safety problem and a dinner service that may not happen. They search on their phone, “cool room repair near me” or “commercial freezer not cold Marrickville”, and call the first business that looks like it will turn up today. In this trade, the sale is decided in the first phone call.

Breakdown work is only half the business, though. The other half is quieter and more profitable over time: planned maintenance for food businesses, cool room and freezer room builds, display cabinet installs for supermarkets and delis, and ice machine servicing for bars and hotels. Marketing should feed both.

Who is calling, and what they type

  • Restaurants, cafés and takeaways: “commercial fridge repair”, “underbench fridge not cooling”, “cool room repair after hours”.
  • Supermarkets, IGAs, delis and butchers: “display fridge repair”, “freezer room repair”, “refrigerated display cabinet service”.
  • Bars, clubs and hotels: “ice machine repair”, “keg room cooling”, “glass froster repair”.
  • Florists, bakeries, pharmacies and labs: temperature-critical storage, often with insurance or compliance pressure behind it.
  • Builders and shopfitters: “cool room installation”, “freezer room construction”, fit-out tenders.

Breakdown searches spike when the weather turns hot, because condensers struggle in heatwaves and old equipment finally gives up. Schedule your ad budget and on-call rosters for that, and keep summer capacity in mind before taking on a big install project in January.

Work to lead with

  • 24/7 breakdown repairs for cool rooms and freezers
  • Planned maintenance agreements for food businesses
  • Cool room and freezer room design and installation
  • Display cabinet and ice machine servicing
  • Refrigerant leak detection and system upgrades

Licences buyers expect to see

Anyone working on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in Australia needs a refrigerant handling licence, and a business that acquires, stores or sells refrigerant needs a refrigerant trading authorisation. Both are administered by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC). The ARC’s conditions require the authorisation number to appear on advertising for services that need it, and on invoices and quotes. Put it in your website footer, quote templates and van signage. Add your electrical licence details where your technicians hold them, because many repairs involve electrical work on compressors and controls.

A site built for the person standing in a warm kitchen

Above the fold on a phone, the breakdown page should show a tap-to-call number, your after-hours availability, your service area and a realistic statement of response arrangements. Don’t promise times you can’t meet; say how you prioritise (stock at risk first) and what the call-out covers. Below that, explain the common faults you fix, the brands and equipment types you work on, and what a customer can check before you arrive, such as the condenser being blocked by boxes.

Separate pages for maintenance contracts, cool room builds, supermarket refrigeration and ice machines let each buyer find their job. A well-built website also needs a short form for non-urgent quotes that asks for equipment type, brand, approximate age, symptoms, business type and preferred time.

Paid search and Google Business Profile

Breakdown keywords suit call-focused Google Ads with a schedule that matches when you can answer. If nobody picks up at 2am, either staff the phone or turn ads off overnight. Exclude domestic searches like “home fridge repair” unless you take that work, and keep the cool room build campaign separate so its longer sales cycle doesn’t muddy breakdown reporting.

On Google Business Profile, choose a refrigeration-specific primary category that matches commercial work, and list after-hours availability accurately. Photos of technicians at work in commercial kitchens, completed cool rooms, condensing units on rooftops and branded vans tell a food business you’ve been there before. Reviews that mention the kind of venue and how quickly stock was saved carry weight with the next owner reading them.

Turn breakdowns into contracts

Every emergency job is a chance to sign a maintenance agreement. After the repair, send a summary of the equipment’s condition and an offer for scheduled servicing. Simple CRM can hold each site’s equipment list and service history, schedule reminders and send that follow-up automatically. Multi-site operators such as franchise groups and supermarket owners respond to a single contractor who knows every site.

Measure emergency calls answered and attended, average breakdown invoice, maintenance contracts signed, build quotes issued and won, and repeat customers by site. Spend levels vary a lot between metro and regional areas; our budget guide covers how to set one.

Questions about commercial refrigeration marketing

Is it worth running ads 24 hours a day?

Only if someone answers 24 hours a day. An after-hours breakdown call that goes to voicemail usually rings the next business on the list within a minute. If you have a genuine on-call roster, overnight and weekend ads can bring some of your most valuable jobs. If not, run ads during staffed hours and say clearly on the site when after-hours service is available, so you don’t pay for clicks you can’t convert.

How do we win maintenance agreements rather than one-off repairs?

Ask at the right moment, which is just after you’ve saved someone’s stock. Follow up with a short report on the equipment’s condition and a simple maintenance offer with visit frequency and what’s checked. Make it a fixed annual or quarterly price. Business owners who have just had a breakdown are more open to prevention than at any other time.

Should we split commercial refrigeration from air conditioning marketing?

If you do both, yes. The buyers, urgency and search terms are different. A restaurant owner searching for cool room repair doesn’t want to land on a split system page. Keep separate service pages and ad campaigns, and only cross-promote where it suits the customer, such as a café needing kitchen cooling as well. Our HVAC marketing page covers the air conditioning side.

How can Quinn Marketing help us start?

Begin with our free marketing audit. We check how quickly a stressed restaurant owner could find and call you on a phone, review your Google profile and ARC authorisation display, and look at how your maintenance and cool room pages are set up. You receive a list of improvements in order of likely impact, with the breakdown-call fixes first. Any implementation is scoped separately.
