Australian service businesses. Clear priorities. Relevant measurement.

Customers want it gone today, at a price they can predict

Rubbish removal customers are usually in the middle of something else. They’re clearing a garage before a move, emptying a deceased relative’s house, finishing a bathroom renovation, or staring at a pile of green waste after a weekend in the garden. They want someone to turn up soon, load it all, and charge roughly what they expected. The two things that lose a job are a vague price and a slow reply.

How people search and compare

Searches are blunt: “rubbish removal near me”, “same day rubbish removal”, “junk removal Penrith”, “green waste removal”, “furniture removal and disposal”, “mattress pick up”. Others describe the situation: “deceased estate clean out”, “hoarder house clean up”, “office clear out”, “renovation waste removal”. Many people also weigh a skip bin against a removal crew, so a short, honest comparison on your site helps. A skip suits people who want to fill it themselves over several days. Your service suits people who want it loaded and gone in an hour. Our skip bin marketing page covers the other side of that choice.

Marketplaces like Airtasker and hipages are busy in this category, and price competition there is fierce. Your own site and Google listing are where better-paid jobs come from, particularly the larger clean-outs.

Price by volume and say what costs extra

Most removal businesses price by load size, such as a quarter, half or full truck, or by cubic metre, with a minimum charge. Put those prices or ranges on the site with a photo of what each load looks like. Then list the items that carry extra charges or need separate handling, such as mattresses, tyres, heavy materials like concrete, bricks and soil, e-waste, paint, gas bottles and chemicals. Most states charge a landfill levy per tonne that is passed on through tip fees, which is a big reason heavy waste is priced differently. Explaining that in a sentence stops customers feeling ambushed on the day.

Photo quoting wins more bookings in this trade than any other single change. Let customers upload photos through the website form or send them by SMS, and reply with a firm price or range. It saves site visits and gets you the booking before the next company answers.

Asbestos, legal disposal and what to say about it

Every rubbish removal site should have a clear asbestos policy. In NSW, SafeWork NSW requires a licensed removalist for removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, and only Class A licence holders can remove friable asbestos. Other states have similar rules through their own work health and safety regulators. Unless you hold the right licence, say plainly that you don’t take asbestos or suspected asbestos sheeting, and what you’ll do if you find it in a load. Old fibro sheds and bathrooms in homes built before 1990 are the usual suspects. Our asbestos removal marketing page is written for the licensed operators you can refer those jobs to.

Legal disposal is also a genuine selling point. The NSW EPA states that the owner of the waste, the owner of the vehicle and the transporter can each commit an offence if waste is taken somewhere that can’t lawfully accept it. Saying where your loads go (licensed transfer stations, recyclers, charities for reusable furniture) reassures customers who’ve seen dumped piles on the news. Only claim a recycling or donation rate if you can back it up with records, because environmental claims are covered by Australian Consumer Law like any other.

Google profile, photos and repeat clients

Most operators run their listing as a service-area business with no public address. Choose the closest primary category the list offers for junk or rubbish removal, and add waste-related secondaries only where they match your work. Photos that convert are before-and-after shots of a cleared garage or yard, your trucks and crew in uniform, and a loaded truck showing what a half load really looks like. Ask for reviews the same day, and suggest the customer mention how fast you came.

The steadier work comes from people who call repeatedly: real estate agents with vacated rentals and deceased estates, property managers, strata managers dealing with dumped items in common areas, builders and renovators. Keep a list of them in Simple CRM and record what each sends you.

Ads and measurement

Split Google Ads campaigns by job type: same-day household, clean-outs, green waste and builders’ waste each have different values. Add negatives for “council clean up”, “council pick up”, “bulky waste collection” and “free” early, because a lot of searchers are looking for their council’s free service. Our Google Ads management watches those terms closely. Budget depends on your area and trucks; see the budget guide.

Measure photo quotes received, quote-to-booking rate, average load value, tip costs as a share of each job, jobs per truck per day and cost per booked job. Ask on every enquiry: what’s being removed, roughly how much, where it is (kerbside, garage, upstairs), access and parking for the truck, any hazardous items, and when it needs to go.

Questions about rubbish removal marketing

Should we show prices on our website or just ask for photos?

Do both. Show load-based prices or ranges with photos of each load size so people can self-qualify, then invite them to send photos for a firm quote. Customers who see a number are more likely to contact you, and the photo step lets you adjust for heavy or awkward items before you arrive. Make the extra charges list clear so the final price matches what was discussed. Surprise surcharges at the truck turn into one-star reviews.

How do we compete with people charging very little on marketplaces?

Don’t try to match them on price. Compete on reliability and legitimacy: same-day attendance when promised, uniformed crews, insurance, a clear asbestos policy, and proof you dispose of waste lawfully. Many customers worry about cheap operators dumping their rubbish, especially after seeing local news stories, and in NSW the waste owner can share liability. Put that reassurance on your website and Google profile, and target the larger clean-out jobs that marketplaces don’t handle well.

How do we kick things off?

Ask for a free marketing audit. Share your service area, truck count and the jobs you want more of, such as estates, builders’ waste or same-day household work. We’ll check your site and Google listing, test your quote process on a phone, and look for wasted ad spend on council-collection searches. You’ll get a prioritised list of improvements, with any implementation quoted on its own.
