Only the plugins the site needs.
Updates, backups and security checks.
What we can help with
New builds, rescues of inherited sites and ongoing care all sit here. Each starts with a look at what’s installed now.
WordPress Development & Design in practice
WordPress can be built three broad ways. A custom theme with the block editor gives tight control and a light site, but layout changes need a developer. A page builder lets staff rearrange sections themselves, at the cost of heavier pages and a dependency on the builder’s update cycle. A bought theme is cheapest up front and often ships with plugins you don’t need. We pick based on who will edit the site and how often, then lock down global colours, fonts and spacing so edits don’t drift off-brand.
Good WordPress structure gives WordPress SEO something to work with: clean URLs, proper headings and one SEO plugin configured properly rather than two fighting each other.
Planning and implementation
Sites rarely get hacked through WordPress core. The usual causes are outdated plugins, nulled premium themes, shared admin logins and old accounts nobody removed. A care plan applies updates on a staging copy before they reach the live site, keeps off-site backups you can restore from, enforces two-factor login for admins and replaces plugins their authors have stopped maintaining. If you won’t keep a site updated and don’t want to pay someone to, a hosted platform may be the safer choice, and we’ll tell you that.
For straightforward trade sites, see small business website development. Builds with custom post types, integrations or unusual templates fall under custom website development.
How we work
01
For existing sites we list the theme, every plugin, PHP version, hosting, user accounts and backup status before changing anything.
02
Templates, blocks and forms are built on a staging copy so the live site keeps taking enquiries during the work.
03
You get admin training and documentation, then choose whether to manage updates in-house or hand them to us monthly.
Measurement and review
On the business side: enquiry forms deliver every time, calls and quote requests are tracked by page, and staff can update content without breaking the layout. On the technical side: everything runs on supported versions, backups restore cleanly, and mobile pages load quickly enough to pass Core Web Vitals.
Care reporting covers updates applied, issues found and any plugin worth replacing. A short monthly note beats an automated report full of green ticks nobody reads.
Good questions
A few useful answers before we talk.
It depends who edits the site. If marketing staff build new landing pages every month, a page builder with locked global styles saves developer time. If the site changes rarely, a custom block theme is lighter and has fewer moving parts. Page builders also add another major plugin to keep updated, and switching away later is close to a rebuild. We weigh those trade-offs with you rather than defaulting to one.
Usually. We take a copy of the infected site for reference, replace compromised files from clean sources, check the database for injected content and rogue admin users, rotate every password and key, and update or remove the plugin that let the attacker in. Then we check Google Search Console for security warnings and request a review if one was issued. Hardening and regular updates afterwards reduce the chance of a repeat.
At minimum: core, theme and plugin updates tested before they go live, off-site backups that have been test-restored, uptime monitoring, security scanning and a regular check that forms and tracking still work. Updates that break something should be rolled back before visitors see the problem. If someone in-house can do this reliably, you may not need a plan, and the tools can be set up for them instead.
It varies. Rescuing an existing site might take a few hours; a new custom theme with integrations is a full project. The main drivers are the number of templates, whether content needs writing or migrating, and how many plugins or integrations are involved. Care is priced monthly by site size and update load. Our budget guide shows how website costs sit alongside SEO and ads.
Yes, from the outside. The audit checks speed, mobile layout, enquiry forms, indexing and on-page SEO, and flags visible signs of an outdated theme or plugin conflicts. A full plugin and security review needs admin access, which is scoped separately. You still get a prioritised checklist you can hand to whoever manages the site.
