Services / Magento SEO
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce can run very large catalogues, and they can just as easily expose millions of crawlable URLs through layered navigation, category paths and store views. We bring that under control, then put the effort into the categories and products that carry revenue.
Crawl control first. Content follows once Google sees the right pages.
Map URL patterns to their commercial role.
Decide what gets crawled and indexed.
Catch regressions before they cost sales.
What we can help with
Magento projects usually involve an in-house or agency development team, so our deliverables are written as tickets with acceptance criteria. Scope, access and fees are agreed before work begins.
Magento SEO in practice
Layered navigation lets shoppers filter by price, colour, size, brand and any attribute set as filterable. Each selection adds a parameter, and multi-select filter extensions multiply the combinations. Left alone, Googlebot can spend much of its time on filter URLs while new products wait to be crawled. We use log files and Search Console to see where crawling actually goes, then set rules. A small number of high-demand filter combinations become static, indexable landing pages, and the rest are handled with canonicals, nofollowed filter links or robots.txt patterns, depending on the build.
Large Magento stores often face the same governance problems as other big sites, which our Enterprise SEO service is designed for.
Configuration and releases
The search engine optimisation settings under Stores, Configuration, Catalog decide whether product URLs include category paths, whether canonical tags are used for categories and products, and whether redirects are created when a URL key changes. Small changes there affect every page. Multi-store setups need each store view’s equivalent pages mapped, and hreflang usually comes from an extension or custom module rather than core. Upgrades, extensions and theme work (Luma, Hyvä or headless) all change output, so we crawl staging before each release.
Category and product page strategy follows our eCommerce SEO approach. Replatforming, including a move onto a new frontend or off Magento entirely, is planned through our website migration services.
How we work
01
We crawl the storefront, review server logs for Googlebot activity and read the catalog SEO configuration for each store view.
02
Each recommendation names the templates or settings affected, the expected output and how to test it, so it slots into your sprint process.
03
Staging is crawled before deployment and production straight after, comparing canonicals, status codes and indexable URL counts.
Measurement and review
Early signs are technical: a smaller share of Googlebot requests going to parameter URLs, fewer duplicate URLs in Search Console and new products indexed sooner. Commercial results follow as organic revenue on target categories, measured in GA4 and checked against Magento order data.
Where you trade in more than one market, results are reported by store view, since an improvement in one can hide a problem in another.
Good questions
The questions eCommerce and development leads tend to ask.
For most stores, no. With category paths switched on, a product in three categories can be reached at three URLs, and moving it between categories changes its address. Top-level product URLs with canonicals keep one stable address per product. If your store already uses category paths and ranks well, switching needs a full redirect plan and should be timed away from peak trading.
Yes, and that’s the usual arrangement. We supply specifications, acceptance criteria and test URLs, review staging builds where you want us to, and verify the result after release. We don’t need to be the ones writing PHP or templates. We do need to be involved early enough that SEO requirements are written into the ticket rather than patched after launch.
Hyvä themes are generally much lighter on the front end, which can help Core Web Vitals, and that has made them a common choice for Magento rebuilds. SEO output still depends on how the theme is implemented: headings, structured data, internal links and canonical handling need the same checks as on any rebuild. We treat a theme change as a migration and test it that way.
There’s no strict threshold, but once a store has thousands of products, layered navigation and more than one store view, logs become the most reliable way to see what Googlebot actually requests. Search Console’s crawl stats give a summary; raw logs show which URL patterns use up crawling and which important pages are rarely visited. We’ll need a sample from your host or CDN.
A crawl sample, a review of layered navigation and catalog SEO settings, canonical and store-view checks on key templates, and Search Console if shared. You receive a prioritised checklist your developers can turn into tickets. Where a fix depends on an extension or a custom module, we say so. Implementation support is a separate, quoted engagement. A useful starting point
On Magento the audit begins with layered navigation and catalog settings, because they decide how much crawling reaches your real categories and products.
