Getting more Google reviews as a tradie comes down to one thing: asking every happy customer, every time, with a system that makes it effortless for them. Here’s how to build the habit.

Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after you’ve finished a job the customer is visibly happy with — the water’s running, the power’s back on, the deck looks great. That’s peak goodwill. Ask in person if you can, then follow up with a text containing the direct link so they can do it in ten seconds from their phone.

Make it effortless

Every extra step loses reviews. Get your Google review short link (or a QR code), and send it directly — don’t make customers search for your business. The easier you make it, the more reviews you get. A saved text template you fire off from the ute after each job is all the system you need.

Scripts you can copy

In person: “Really glad you’re happy with it. Reviews make a huge difference for a small business like mine — would you mind leaving a quick one on Google? I’ll text you the link now so it’s easy.”

Follow-up text: “Thanks again for having us out today, [name]. If you’ve got 30 seconds, a quick Google review would mean a lot — here’s the link: [link]. Cheers, [your name].”

Encourage them to mention the suburb and the type of job — “great emergency electrician in Penrith” — because those reviews also help you rank for exactly those searches.

Respond to every review

Reply to all of them, good and bad. A short thank-you on positive reviews shows you’re engaged. On a negative review, stay calm and professional, acknowledge the issue and offer to make it right — future customers judge you more on how you handle criticism than on the criticism itself. Never argue.

Keep them coming

Recency matters — a steady trickle of new reviews beats a big burst two years ago. Make the ask part of finishing every job and the volume takes care of itself.
