Getting your digital advertising sizes right might sound like a minor design detail, but the dimensions and aspect ratio of your creative can have a major impact on how an advertisement looks once it appears across Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn and other digital platforms.
An image designed perfectly for a Facebook Feed advertisement may be cropped when it appears in Instagram Stories. A landscape Google Display creative won’t naturally fill a vertical mobile placement. And a square social media graphic can leave large amounts of unused screen space when displayed as a Reel, Story or TikTok.
The solution isn’t simply creating one image and hoping every advertising platform adapts it correctly.
This guide covers the recommended digital advertising sizes, social media post sizes, image dimensions and video aspect ratios marketers, designers and business owners should know.
Digital Advertising Sizes Quick Reference Guide
If you just need the dimensions, the following are the most useful creative sizes to have available.
| Platform / Placement | Recommended Size | Aspect Ratio |
|---|
| Facebook Feed – Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| Facebook Feed – Portrait | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 |
| Facebook Stories | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Facebook Reels | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Instagram Square Post | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| Instagram Portrait Post | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 |
| Instagram Landscape Post | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 |
| Instagram Stories | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Instagram Reels | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Meta Carousel | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| Google Ads Landscape Image | 1200 × 628 px | 1.91:1 |
| Google Ads Square Image | 1200 × 1200 px | 1:1 |
| Google Ads Vertical Image | 900 × 1600 px | 9:16 |
| LinkedIn Single Image – Square | 1200 × 1200 px | 1:1 |
| LinkedIn Landscape | 1200 × 627 px | Approx. 1.91:1 |
| LinkedIn Carousel | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| TikTok Video | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| YouTube Standard Video | 1920 × 1080 px | 16:9 |
| YouTube Shorts | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Pinterest Standard Pin | 1000 × 1500 px | 2:3 |
| X Square Image | 1200 × 1200 px | 1:1 |
| X Landscape Image | 1200 × 628 px | 1.91:1 |
| Snapchat Ad | 1080 × 1920 px* | 9:16 |
*Snapchat’s current minimum/recommended ad specification includes 720 × 1280 px, although 1080 × 1920 px is a practical high-resolution 9:16 production size. Snapchat specifies a 9:16 ratio for Single Image or Video Ads.
If you manage advertising across multiple platforms, there are four particularly useful master creative sizes to remember:
1080 × 1080 – Square
1080 × 1350 – Portrait
1080 × 1920 – Full-screen vertical
1200 × 628 – Landscape
Producing creative in these four formats will cover a significant proportion of modern digital advertising placements.
Understanding Pixels and Aspect Ratios
Before looking at individual platforms, it helps to understand the difference between image dimensions and aspect ratio.
Dimensions are measured in pixels.
For example:
1080 × 1080 pixels
means the image is 1,080 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels high.
Aspect ratio describes the relationship between the width and height.
An image measuring 1080 × 1080 has an aspect ratio of:
1:1
An image measuring 1080 × 1920 has an aspect ratio of:
9:16
And an image measuring 1920 × 1080 has an aspect ratio of:
16:9
Modern advertising platforms increasingly work around aspect ratios rather than one mandatory pixel dimension. Meta, for example, supports different aspect ratios across individual ad placements, while Google similarly uses landscape, square and vertical assets across its responsive advertising products.
This is important because simply uploading a high-resolution image does not guarantee it will display correctly.
The composition still needs to suit the shape of the placement.
Facebook Ad Sizes
Facebook advertisements can appear across numerous placements including:
- Facebook Feed
- Facebook Stories
- Facebook Reels
- Facebook Marketplace
- Facebook Search
- Facebook video feeds
- Right column
- Meta Audience Network
Because those placements have dramatically different dimensions, there is no single universal Facebook ad size.
Meta recommends different ratios depending on where the advertisement appears. For example, vertical creative is generally better suited to mobile-first placements while horizontal creative may be appropriate for certain video placements.
Facebook Feed Ad Size
For Facebook Feed advertisements, two highly useful formats are:
Square Facebook Ad
- Size: 1080 × 1080 px
- Aspect ratio: 1:1
Portrait Facebook Ad
- Size: 1080 × 1350 px
- Aspect ratio: 4:5
Meta currently lists a minimum recommended Facebook Feed resolution of 1080 × 1080 for 1:1 creative and supports 4:5 portrait creative as well.
For mobile advertising, we generally prefer 4:5 portrait creative when the placement supports it because the advertisement occupies more vertical screen space than a square image.
Facebook Story Ad Size
Recommended working size:
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Stories are a full-screen mobile experience, so your artwork should be designed vertically rather than simply cropping a square Facebook advertisement.
Meta recommends 9:16 creative for Stories and provides placement-specific guidance around keeping important text and creative elements away from interface overlays.
Facebook Reels Ad Size
Recommended size:
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Reels should be designed as vertical-first content.
Avoid putting critical headlines, logos, pricing or calls to action immediately against the top or bottom edge. Facebook’s interface, captions and advertising controls can occupy parts of the screen.
Facebook Carousel Ad Size
A safe and highly reusable carousel format is:
1080 × 1080 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
Meta carousel ads can contain between two and ten cards and currently support square 1:1, portrait 4:5 and vertical 9:16 aspect ratios.
Square remains useful when every card needs a consistent design that can be reused across multiple placements.
Instagram Post Sizes
Instagram supports several different post dimensions.
The best Instagram post size depends on whether you’re publishing a square image, portrait image, landscape image, Story or Reel.
Instagram Square Post Size
1080 × 1080 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
The traditional Instagram square remains one of the safest formats for posts and carousels.
It is particularly useful where creative may also be reused across Facebook.
Instagram Portrait Post Size
1080 × 1350 px
Aspect ratio:
4:5
For most promotional Instagram Feed creative, portrait is one of our preferred formats.
Why?
Because it occupies more of the mobile screen.
A 4:5 graphic can give you additional space for:
- Headlines
- Product photography
- Offers
- Testimonials
- Calls to action
- Supporting information
Meta supports 4:5 creative for feed placements and specifically recommends vertical 4:5 for single-image ads in relevant feed placements.
Instagram Landscape Post Size
1080 × 566 px
Aspect ratio:
1.91:1
Landscape images can still be useful for photography, property imagery, vehicles, architecture and other subjects naturally captured horizontally.
However, they occupy substantially less space on a vertically held mobile phone than square or portrait creative.
Instagram Story Size
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Instagram Stories should fill the vertical screen.
Keep important information towards the centre of the artwork rather than placing text directly against the edges.
Instagram Reel Size
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
For Reels, shoot and edit vertically from the beginning whenever possible.
Trying to convert traditional landscape footage into a vertical Reel afterwards often produces awkward crops, tiny subjects or unused space.
Should Instagram Ads Be 1080 × 1080 or 1080 × 1350?
Both can work.
For Feed advertising, however, 1080 × 1350 portrait creative is often our preferred starting point.
The reason is simple: screen real estate.
On a mobile device, a 4:5 advertisement occupies more vertical space than a square advertisement.
That does not mean every campaign should abandon square assets. Ideally, create both:
- 1080 × 1350 for portrait placements
- 1080 × 1080 for square placements
- 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels
Providing Meta with placement-specific creative gives you more control over how your advertisements appear.
Meta Ads: The Three Creative Sizes We Recommend
If you’re running both Facebook and Instagram advertising and don’t want your design team producing dozens of versions, start with these three:
1. 1080 × 1080
Use for:
- Facebook Feed
- Instagram Feed
- Carousel ads
- General square social posts
2. 1080 × 1350
Use for:
- Facebook Feed
- Instagram Feed
- Portrait advertisements
- Mobile-first static campaigns
3. 1080 × 1920
Use for:
- Instagram Stories
- Facebook Stories
- Instagram Reels
- Facebook Reels
- Vertical video campaigns
This three-size system covers a large portion of everyday Meta advertising requirements.
Google Ads Image Sizes
Google’s advertising ecosystem works differently from Facebook and Instagram.
Responsive Display Ads and Performance Max campaigns can use several image assets, which Google then adapts to different placements.
Google currently identifies 1200 × 628 landscape and 1200 × 1200 square as two of the most common image sizes across Google Ads.
Google Ads Landscape Image
Recommended:
1200 × 628 px
Aspect ratio:
1.91:1
Google lists a minimum size of 600 × 314 px for relevant responsive display landscape assets.
Google Ads Square Image
Recommended:
1200 × 1200 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
Google’s minimum for square responsive display imagery is 300 × 300 px, although using the higher recommended resolution gives Google a better quality source asset to work with.
Google Ads Vertical Image
Recommended:
900 × 1600 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Google’s responsive display guidance now supports vertical imagery, with 900 × 1600 listed as a recommended vertical size.
Google Performance Max Image Sizes
For Performance Max, useful assets include:
Landscape: 1200 × 628 px
Square: 1200 × 1200 px
Google recommends supplying multiple quality images and advises keeping important content within the centre of the image because assets can be adapted for different placements.
Common Google Display Banner Sizes
Traditional uploaded Google Display advertisements still use fixed banner dimensions.
Common desktop banner sizes include:
- 300 × 250 px – Medium Rectangle
- 336 × 280 px – Large Rectangle
- 728 × 90 px – Leaderboard
- 970 × 90 px – Large Leaderboard
- 468 × 60 px – Banner
- 300 × 600 px – Half Page
- 160 × 600 px – Wide Skyscraper
- 250 × 250 px – Square
- 200 × 200 px – Small Square
Google identifies these among the commonly used display dimensions.
Responsive Display Ads have reduced the need for advertisers to manually create every possible banner size, but fixed display banners remain relevant in some campaigns.
TikTok Ad Sizes
TikTok is fundamentally a vertical video platform.
For most TikTok creative, think:
9:16
Recommended production size:
1080 × 1920 px
TikTok’s advertising requirements support vertical 9:16, square 1:1 and horizontal 16:9 creative in applicable formats, although vertical is the natural fit for the platform.
For some TikTok ad products, TikTok specifies a vertical minimum of at least 720 × 1280 px.
TikTok Video Size
Recommended:
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
TikTok Creative Safe Zones
Don’t position essential content directly against the outer edges of a TikTok video.
Leave space for interface elements such as:
- Captions
- Account information
- Calls to action
- Engagement buttons
- Other TikTok interface elements
TikTok publishes dedicated safe-zone templates because the available area can vary according to the ad format and caption length.
LinkedIn Ad Sizes
LinkedIn is heavily used for B2B advertising, professional services, recruitment and business-to-business lead generation.
LinkedIn Single Image Ad
A highly reusable square size is:
1200 × 1200 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
Landscape creative is also commonly used around:
1200 × 627 px
Aspect ratio:
Approximately 1.91:1
LinkedIn’s current advertising specifications allow multiple image ratios for Sponsored Content, so advertisers should check the selected placement when preparing campaign assets.
LinkedIn Carousel Ad Size
Recommended:
1080 × 1080 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
LinkedIn currently recommends 1080 × 1080 individual carousel images and allows between two and ten carousel cards.
Carousels can work particularly well for:
- Explaining a process
- Presenting case studies
- Showing statistics
- Breaking down a service
- Demonstrating multiple products
- Thought leadership content
YouTube Advertising and Video Sizes
Standard YouTube Video
Recommended:
1920 × 1080 px
Aspect ratio:
16:9
16:9 remains the standard widescreen format for conventional YouTube viewing.
YouTube Shorts
Recommended:
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Short-form vertical content should generally be produced separately from conventional YouTube videos rather than automatically cropping a 16:9 video.
Google’s video advertising ecosystem supports horizontal 16:9, vertical 9:16 and square 1:1 video, among other supported ratios.
Pinterest Image and Ad Sizes
Pinterest is more vertically orientated than many traditional social platforms.
Standard Pinterest Pin
Recommended:
1000 × 1500 px
Aspect ratio:
2:3
Pinterest officially recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio at 1000 × 1500 px and warns that taller Pins may be cut off within parts of the feed.
Pinterest Full-Screen Video
Recommended:
1080 × 1920 px
Aspect ratio:
9:16
Pinterest recommends 9:16 for full-bleed video experiences.
Pinterest is one platform where simply reusing square Instagram artwork can mean giving up valuable screen space.
X Advertising Image Sizes
X supports several advertising image ratios.
X Square Image Ad
Recommended:
1200 × 1200 px
Aspect ratio:
1:1
X Landscape Image Ad
Recommended:
1200 × 628 px
Aspect ratio:
1.91:1
X currently lists these dimensions for standalone image advertising and additionally supports expanded ratios including 4:5, 2:3, 16:9 and 9:16 in applicable formats.
This is another example of why advertisers should increasingly think about creative systems rather than one universal image size.
Snapchat Ad Sizes
Snapchat is designed around full-screen vertical content.
For Single Image or Video Ads, Snapchat currently specifies:
Aspect ratio: 9:16
Minimum/recommended listed resolution: 720 × 1280 px
Snapchat supports formats including MP4, MOV, JPG and PNG depending on the advertisement type.
For production, creating the source artwork or video at:
1080 × 1920 px
provides a high-resolution 9:16 master that can also be adapted for Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
The Best Universal Social Media Image Size
There isn’t truly one universal social media size.
However, if you absolutely had to choose one image dimension for general social media posting, we’d choose:
1080 × 1080 px
Why?
Because square creative can be used reasonably well across:
- Facebook
- Instagram
- LinkedIn
- X
- Many carousel formats
But usable and optimal aren’t the same thing.
For a modern digital advertising campaign, we recommend designing at least three variations:
Square – 1080 × 1080
Portrait – 1080 × 1350
Vertical – 1080 × 1920
Add a 1200 × 628 landscape image when you’re also running Google Ads or placements where landscape assets are required.
Don’t Just Resize the Same Advertisement
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is designing one piece of artwork and pressing “resize” for every other advertising placement.
Technically, you can.
Creatively, it often doesn’t work.
Imagine an advertisement containing:
- A person’s face
- Large headline
- Company logo
- Price
- Product image
- Call-to-action button
If it was originally designed at 1080 × 1080, converting it to 1080 × 1920 leaves a large amount of additional vertical space.
Simply stretching the background doesn’t turn it into good Story creative.
The composition should be reconsidered.
For example:
Square
Headline → Person → Offer → CTA
Vertical
Headline
Person / Product
Supporting message
Offer
CTA
The hierarchy changes with the canvas.
Social Media Safe Zones
A creative can technically have the correct dimensions and still display badly.
This usually happens because critical information is positioned underneath platform interface elements.
This is particularly important for:
- Instagram Stories
- Instagram Reels
- Facebook Stories
- Facebook Reels
- TikTok
- YouTube Shorts
- Snapchat
Keep critical information away from the extreme edges of vertical creative.
This includes:
- Logos
- Phone numbers
- Prices
- Promotional terms
- Headlines
- Subtitles
- Calls to action
Both Meta and TikTok provide specific safe-zone guidance because interface elements can cover portions of full-screen creative.
JPG, PNG or WebP: What Should You Use?
For digital advertising graphics, the two most common formats remain JPG and PNG.
Use JPG for:
- Photography
- Complex imagery
- Smaller file sizes
- Background photographs
Use PNG for:
- Logos
- Graphics
- Text-heavy creative
- Artwork where sharp edges matter
- Transparent backgrounds where supported
Don’t export an enormous file simply because the design software allows it.
Advertising platforms compress uploaded media, and excessively large files do not necessarily result in better visual quality.
What Resolution Should Digital Ads Be?
Where possible, upload imagery at the platform’s recommended resolution rather than merely meeting its minimum dimensions.
For example, Google accepts some responsive image assets below 1200 pixels, but recommends 1200 × 1200 and 1200 × 628 for its major square and landscape formats.
The goal should be to provide the platform with a clean, high-quality source asset without unnecessary compression or upscaling.
Why Digital Advertising Sizes Matter
Correct digital advertising dimensions improve more than aesthetics.
They help protect:
Branding
A logo that is cropped or hidden underneath an interface element weakens brand recognition.
Readability
An advertisement designed for desktop may contain text that becomes unreadable when compressed into a mobile placement.
Screen Space
Vertical creative can occupy dramatically more of a mobile screen than landscape content.
Creative Control
Providing placement-specific artwork reduces the amount of automated cropping required.
User Experience
Good creative should feel native to the platform where somebody encounters it.
A TikTok advertisement should feel like it belongs on TikTok.
A LinkedIn advertisement should work naturally inside LinkedIn’s feed.
A YouTube video should suit the way somebody consumes YouTube content.
Dimensions are part of that experience.
Digital Advertising Size Cheat Sheet for Designers
If you’re briefing a designer or building reusable templates in Canva, Photoshop, Figma or another design platform, start by creating the following master templates:
Square
1080 × 1080 px
Use for:
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and carousels.
Portrait Feed
1080 × 1350 px
Use for:
Facebook and Instagram Feed.
Vertical Video
1080 × 1920 px
Use for:
Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat.
Landscape Advertising
1200 × 628 px
Use for:
Google Ads, X and other landscape advertising placements.
Pinterest
1000 × 1500 px
Use for:
Pinterest Pins.
YouTube Landscape
1920 × 1080 px
Use for:
Standard YouTube videos and conventional 16:9 video production.
With those six templates, a marketing team can handle the vast majority of everyday digital campaign creative without starting every asset from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Advertising Sizes
What size should a Facebook ad be?
For Facebook Feed ads, 1080 × 1080 px square or 1080 × 1350 px portrait are excellent starting points. For Facebook Stories and Reels, use 1080 × 1920 px vertical creative.
What is the best size for an Instagram post?
Use 1080 × 1080 px for a square Instagram post or 1080 × 1350 px for a portrait post. Portrait posts occupy more vertical screen space and are particularly useful for mobile-first content.
What size should Instagram Stories be?
Instagram Stories should use a 9:16 aspect ratio, with 1080 × 1920 px being a practical production size.
What is the Instagram Reel size?
Create Instagram Reels at 1080 × 1920 px using a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio.
What size should TikTok videos be?
TikTok videos should generally be produced vertically at 1080 × 1920 px, using a 9:16 aspect ratio. TikTok supports other ratios in certain advertising formats, but vertical creative is best suited to the platform.
What size should Google Ads images be?
Two of the most important Google advertising image sizes are 1200 × 628 px for landscape assets and 1200 × 1200 px for square assets. Google also supports vertical responsive creative.
What is the best LinkedIn ad size?
For square LinkedIn advertising creative, 1200 × 1200 px is a useful format. LinkedIn carousel ads currently recommend 1080 × 1080 px cards.
What is the standard YouTube video size?
The standard high-definition YouTube video size is 1920 × 1080 px, which uses the traditional 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.
What size should YouTube Shorts be?
YouTube Shorts should generally be produced at 1080 × 1920 px using the 9:16 vertical format.
What size should Pinterest posts be?
Pinterest recommends 1000 × 1500 px with a 2:3 aspect ratio for standard Pins.
Is 1080 × 1080 still good for social media?
Yes. 1080 × 1080 px remains one of the most versatile social media image dimensions, particularly for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and carousel advertising. However, it shouldn’t be the only format you create. Vertical 4:5 and 9:16 creative can make significantly better use of mobile screen space.
Can I use the same image for Facebook and Instagram ads?
Yes, but ideally you should provide multiple versions of the creative.
We recommend preparing:
- 1080 × 1080 square
- 1080 × 1350 portrait
- 1080 × 1920 vertical
This allows Meta to use creative better suited to Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels.
Final Digital Advertising Size Recommendations
There are hundreds of potential digital advertising dimensions, but most businesses don’t need hundreds of design templates.
Instead, build a flexible creative system.
For most campaigns, start with:
1080 × 1080 px – Square
For general social media and carousel creative.
1080 × 1350 px – Portrait
For Facebook and Instagram Feed advertising.
1080 × 1920 px – Vertical
For Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts and Snapchat.
1200 × 628 px – Landscape
For Google advertising and landscape placements.
1200 × 1200 px – Google Square
For Google responsive advertising and Performance Max.
1000 × 1500 px – Pinterest
For standard Pinterest Pins.
1920 × 1080 px – Widescreen Video
For YouTube and conventional landscape video.
Most importantly, don’t treat digital advertising sizes as purely a technical requirement.
The dimensions determine how much screen space you receive, how your message is presented and how naturally your advertisement fits the platform.
Design for the placement first, then resize where appropriate.
That approach produces far better creative than creating one generic advertisement and forcing it into every available digital format.
