It’s what puts you in the “map pack” — the three business listings that appear above the normal search results when someone searches “electrician near me” or “plumber [suburb]”. Get it right and you show up exactly when customers are ready to call. Here’s how to own that spot.

Claim and complete every field

Start by claiming and verifying your profile, then fill in everything — a half-finished profile ranks poorly and looks unprofessional. Business name, service area, hours, phone, website, description: all of it. Google rewards complete profiles because they give customers a better answer.

Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals in local search. Be specific: “Electrician” beats “Contractor”, and if a more precise category fits your main work, use it. Add relevant secondary categories for your other services, but let the primary one reflect your bread and butter.

Add real photos of real work

Profiles with genuine photos of completed jobs, your team and your vehicles get more clicks and calls than stock imagery or empty galleries. Add new photos regularly — it signals to Google that the business is active, and it gives customers the confidence that you do quality work.

Use local keywords naturally

In your description and services, mention what you do and where — “roof repairs in Rockingham”, “hot water systems across the Northern Beaches”. Don’t stuff it with every suburb; write it for a human and include your key service areas naturally. Fill in the Services section with each thing you offer so you can appear for those specific searches.

Reviews are the tiebreaker

Between two similar listings, the one with more recent, higher-quality reviews wins — both in ranking and in the customer’s choice. Reviews that mention the suburb and the job type are especially powerful.
